Research Team Leader- CSS

The Center for Naval Analysis (CNA) Center for Stability and Development (CSD) provides a wide range of policy and operational analyses for government and non-government sponsors on such topics as stability operations, counterinsurgency, counterterrorism, pre- and post-conflict societies, security force assistance, sub- and non-state centers of power, and governance. CSD provides analytic support to both operational and policy decision-makers, and draws deeply from primary sources, field research, and real-world operations.

The Research Team Leader (RTL) for CSD develops and executes a long-term strategy that ensures the center’s continued growth and wellbeing. Key areas of responsibility include ensuring quality of analysis, building and maintaining client relationships, developing business, participating in outreach efforts, and overseeing recruitment, retention, and professional development of the CSD staff.

The RTL is expected to execute a robust body of research and analysis while leading CSD. The requirements for the position include an entrepreneurial spirit, a willingness to lead by example, an ability to work collaboratively across CNA, and a proven record of positive interactions with senior military and civilian leaders, foreign government officials, scholars, and partner institutions.

The RTL is responsible for the team’s overall quality, quantity of output, adherence to schedules and budgets, and for ensuring that individual client’s needs are met. The RTL is also responsible for the direct supervision of study directors and team members. This leadership role carries with it personal and corporate responsibility to build and sustain a respectful workplace at CNA.

Requirements

Education: An advanced degree in international relations, political science, other social sciences, or related discipline.

Experience: At least 12 years of experience in research and analysis, prior experience as a study director on major projects for clients, and significant experience or expertise in a scientific or policy area relevant to client needs and CNA programs. Field experience is desirable.

Skills: An ability to oversee multiple research projects; conduct independent research; direct research by individual analysts and team projects; perform quality assurance reviews of projects and ensure they are completed on time and within budget; assemble and present complex analyses and communicate them effectively to clients; understand and objectively critique ongoing research; understand client’s needs and integrate those needs into CNA’s ongoing research program; and prepare objective, constructive performance evaluations for team members.
